Jewish Burial with Dignity

The Jewish Burial with Dignity program allows members of the Jewish community to receive a proper funeral and burial even if they are financially challenged at the time of their passing.

There are two different avenues of assistance within the Jewish Burial with Dignity program.

HFLNJ Grant Program: For individuals with virtually no assets. This program offers individuals who qualify a free funeral and burial in one of the Jewish cemeteries in Newark and is overseen by the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest New Jersey.

Interest-free Loan Program: For those with very modest assets, those whose family desires something more than a simple Jewish funeral and burial, and the deceased wishes to be buried in a Jewish cemetery of their choice. This loan program assists in covering the costs for a proper Jewish funeral and burial.

  • Who May Apply

The borrower must live in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Monmouth, Middlesex, Passaic, Sussex, and Union counties.

The borrower must be a member of the Jewish community or work for a Jewish organization.

If the borrower has a spouse/partner, that individual is also required to sign the loan documents.

The borrower must be 21 years of age or older.

  • Loan Terms

Jewish Burial with Dignity loans have varying repayment terms depending upon the purpose and amount of the loan.

Jewish Burial with Dignity loans over $2,000 require an Endorser who is a New Jersey resident, and loans above $5,000 require two Endorsers – one of whom is a New Jersey resident.

A grace period of approximately 3 months is given before repayment begins.

The repayment period ranges from 18-60 months.

  • Who May Be an Endorser

When two endorsers are required, at least one must be a New Jersey resident, who is credit-worthy.

Endorsers may not be a member of the clergy, or political office holder, or on active duty in the military.

An applicant may not be a borrower and an endorser at the same time.

The Endorser must fill out an information form and is required to sign the applicant’s loan documents.
